What do I do if I fail an assignment?

Failing an assignment can be a stressful experience. If you feel stuck and you're not sure how to get unstuck we recommend reaching out to your marker for assistance in reworking the assignment and your SEM if you need additional support.*

So, you've received a fail grade, what do you do next?

  1. Read section 9.9 of our Student Handbook for details on resubmission eligibility and the resubmission process. You will not be eligible to resubmit if you failed due to late penalties alone.
  2. Once you know you are eligible to resubmit: Read through your marker's feedback carefully so you understand what you need to do to achieve the outcomes for that assignment.
  3. Rework the assignment within ONE WEEK of the grade being awarded.
  4. Add a new submission to the second attempt in the assignment on Moodle.

If you have any questions relating to the assignment or your feedback, please contact your marker. If you have any questions relating to the process of resubmission, please contact moodle@acom.edu.au.

*Your SEM can provide guidance on when it is appropriate to apply for an extension or an enabling plan.

What do I do with the numbers (Originality Score)?

Turnitin will generate an Originality Score. This is a percentage that reflects how much of your assignment is found in other sources. The Score comes with a detailed report of which phrases are duplicated (without quotation marks) and from which sources. Checking this report and correcting any direct quotations with appropriate citations will ensure that you are not committing Academic Misconduct and will not be penalised for plagiarism.

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection software designed to uphold academic integrity. When you submit to an assignment through Moodle you will receive an Originality Score, and a report which highlights any text duplicated from other sources without quotation marks. This will help you and your markers ensure you have not improperly used other people’s words.

Where are the unit registration/change and extension request forms?

You'll find the online forms in the menu at the top of the page under "Forms". If the menu does not appear at the top of the page, scroll right down to the bottom to the grey footer instead.

Where can I find the assessment coversheet?

The assessment cover sheet can be found in the blue menu at the top of the page under "Resources", or in any of your units, underneath the "Assessments" banner.

It should look something like this:

Click on the link "Assessment Resources" and a pop-up will appear where you can download the files.

Where can I see my forum rubric?

If you'd like to see the forum rubric in your forums, you can click on the button displayed in the screenshot below. You can see it before and after your marker applies a grade!
